The best pattern grading book published in the United States is Professional Pattern Grading for Women’s, Men’s, and Children’s Apparel by Jack Handford.

Unfortunately, because it’s not as well known as the textbooks used in schools, it is out of print -for now. Keep in mind this is a grading book NOT a pattern design book. It is to help grade from one size to another. Read more. 3 people found this helpful.

With the measurements in my example, if I were to grade a pattern for a shirt, it might look something like this: XS Bust, M Waist, S Hip Grading Path Notice how I kept along the XS pattern size down the bust, moved out for the waist then pulled back in again for the hip.

Grading a pattern and altering a pattern are two very different things. When you grade a pattern, you are creating the same style in another size - EVERY measurement point is changed, following a strict formula, to maintain the same fit and proportion in each new size.

I have the old Readers Digest Book that I begged from my mom since she had an extra (her mom had given her another copy) and it is my favorite sewing book. Pattern cutting and Making up by Martin Shoben and Janet P Ward. A book that gives you instructions to make your patterns and to stitch it properly.

Pattern grading is an easy way to replicate a pattern to scale, saving you from having to draft the whole thing. It can be your go-to if you need to size an entire pattern up a smidge.
